The hypothesized ancient Calabrian origin of the Perricone (ancient vine variety of the eastern Mediterranean crossed with a distant relative of Gaglioppo) makes it a super native Sicilian but related to many different families of Italian autochthonous vine varieties. If it is true that Calabria, together with Lucania and a part of Puglia, gave life to the “Enotria” (of which a bunch is depicted in the image) that has given birth to many modern Italian wines, we can consider it a large and variegated vines variety such as Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo nero and others.
