It is said that one day King Carlo Alberto of Savoy complained, jokingly, with the Marquise of Barolo of never having tasted this famous Barolo, which was considered good.

Once daily, the Marquise gave the King 325 Carrà (600 liter barrels), except for the Lent period, when they reached Palazzo Reale on the same number of wagons. The King was so enthusiastic about the wine that he acquired the estate of Verduno, becoming the producer of it. His successor, Vittorio Emanuele II, acquired Fontanafredda’s estate in Serralunga d’Alba. He gave it to his famous lover Bella Rosin, who later became his wife with a morganatic wedding (today owned by Oscar Farinetti, patron of the Colossus Eataly).

It can also be said that Barolo was always present on Cavour’s table (one of them is still preserved at the Turin Change Restaurant). Barolo witnessed all the conversations and political plans discussed at the table, particularly the Italy Unification project.
